How to Search the Dunkirk Court Docket
Use MyCase and begin with the court named on the summons. Choose Jay County for Circuit or Superior matters. Choose “Jay County - Portland City Court” when a Dunkirk ordinance, misdemeanor, or infraction may fall within the documented interlocal route. There is no Dunkirk selector. Search by exact case or citation number when possible; otherwise use a party name with court, category, status, and filing-date filters.
- Read the ticket or notice for its court and number.
- Search Jay County first for a county-filed case.
- Search Portland City Court for a covered municipal matter.
- Review the latest events, documents, status, and setting.
- Call the named court when no match appears or a date is unclear.
An empty search does not prove there is no record. Spelling, an incorrect venue, a recent filing, an older case, or an access restriction can prevent a match. MyCase may also require a captcha. The Indiana Judicial Branch advises contacting the local court for an upcoming date or a copy that is unavailable online.
Dunkirk Uses Two Court Routes
Dunkirk’s central search fact is the split between county court and Portland City Court. A 2017 Portland special-ordinance table records an interlocal agreement that allows Portland City Court to hear and dispose of Dunkirk ordinance violations and specified misdemeanors or infractions occurring in Dunkirk. It does not turn Dunkirk into a separate court or imply that every Dunkirk case belongs in Portland.
| Possible record | Start here | Then confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Dunkirk ordinance or covered infraction | Portland City Court choice | Dunkirk or Portland office |
| Jay criminal, civil, family, probate | Jay County choice | Jay County Clerk |
| Town administrative record | Dunkirk city contact | Record custodian |
Use the filing court shown in the result. The location of an incident is not the same as the court that owns the docket.
The Dunkirk Municipal Court
No separate Dunkirk Municipal Court appears in the current Indiana court directory, MyCase court list, or CourtCal availability response. The heading names the required topic, but the accurate answer is a documented absence. Dunkirk users should not look for a courthouse, judge, payment portal, or docket viewer bearing the city’s name.
The official Jay County city directory lists Dunkirk at 131 S Main Street and 765-768-6565. That municipal contact can help identify an ordinance custodian. It is not automatically the custodian of a filed court case. For covered matters, Portland City Court is at 1616 N Franklin Street, Suite B, and can be reached at 260-726-3358.
This distinction prevents requests from bouncing between offices. State the ordinance, event date, person or business name, and any ticket or case number when asking where the record went.
Dunkirk’s Interlocal Agreement
The Portland special-ordinance table identifies the Dunkirk agreement in 2017. The agreement is the official basis for checking Portland City Court, not a general assumption about nearby towns. Its scope covers ordinance violations and specified misdemeanor or infraction matters occurring in Dunkirk.
A searcher should compare three facts: the cited law, the filing court, and the case number. An ordinance citation may use the Portland route, while a different criminal charge may be assigned between Jay Circuit and Superior under local rule. If the matter was never filed as a court case, Dunkirk may retain an administrative ordinance record.

Dunkirk Court Dates and Settings
A Dunkirk date appears under the court that accepted the case. Read the newest MyCase event rather than treating the first scheduled date as final. “Setting” means a scheduled court event and may describe an initial hearing, pretrial conference, trial, or compliance review. A continuance moves an event; it does not dismiss the case. A reset creates a later setting that should be confirmed directly.
| Date | Newest event date in the case summary |
|---|---|
| Time | Listed start time, subject to court confirmation |
| Court | Portland City Court, Jay Circuit, or Jay Superior |
| Judge | Judicial officer assigned to the event |
| Setting Type | Initial hearing, pretrial, trial, or review |
No Dunkirk CourtCal Node
The statewide CourtCal application did not return a participating Jay County court during research. There was no Dunkirk node because there is no separately listed Dunkirk court, and the Jay result itself had an empty court list. CourtCal therefore cannot be promised as a local daily calendar.
Confirm the venue: Match the summons to the MyCase court label, then call that court before appearing.
The absence of a calendar listing is not evidence that a hearing was canceled. Use MyCase events, the paper notice, Portland City Court for covered municipal matters, or the Jay Clerk for county cases.
Dunkirk Traffic Tickets
A Dunkirk citation is not guaranteed to appear under a Dunkirk-named court. Enter the citation number exactly as printed, then test the likely Jay County and Portland City Court choices. The MyCase case tab also accepts a case number or cross reference. A law-enforcement agency number may differ from the court number, so preserve both.
When Portland City Court holds the ticket, its published procedure controls admission, denial, payment, and the initial hearing. Paying is an admission. A denial requires appearing for the initial hearing so a trial date can be set. Portland’s PayGov page is a payment form, not a search tool. No Dunkirk-specific citation search or pay portal was found. See Jay County traffic court records for more on county routes.
Dunkirk Rights in Portland
Portland City Court’s traffic notice describes the right to counsel, a speedy trial, confrontation of witnesses, presenting witnesses, proof by the State under the stated standard, and appeal. Those rights matter when the interlocal route places a Dunkirk matter there. The court’s listed fine schedule and payment terms should be checked against the actual summons.
- Admit
- Accept the violation and follow the stated payment route.
- Deny
- Contest the allegation and appear for the initial hearing.
- Continuance
- A court-approved move to another date, not a dismissal.
- Disposition
- The recorded outcome of the case.
Portland states that missed payment can add a $25 late fee per ticket and may affect driving privileges. Apply that statement only when Portland City Court owns the matter.
Where Dunkirk Cases End Up
Jay County’s local criminal assignment rule sends Murder, former Class A through C felonies, and Level 1 through 5 felonies to Circuit Court, with a stated Title 9 exception. Other criminal cases generally file in Superior Court, subject to judicial reassignment. Civil, family, and probate matters use the court with legal jurisdiction. The city where facts arose does not establish the docket venue.

MyCase shows the court in the case header. If a Portland search fails, use the Jay County filter and then the Jay County court docket route. An appeal may receive a separate appellate number.
Dunkirk Records and Statistics
The Indiana trial and probation statistics page publishes administrative court reports rather than live Dunkirk case entries.

Use reported year labels when comparing workload. A caseload total cannot confirm one person’s matter.
The Indiana Courts publications index provides statewide updates that may affect access rules.

Current rules, MyCase, and the proper clerk remain the controlling sources for access.
Dunkirk Population Context
Dunkirk had 2,164 residents in the 2020 Census, making it Jay County’s second-largest incorporated place. That is civic context, not a local court caseload. With no separate Dunkirk court, statistics cannot produce a Dunkirk judicial total. Use the named Jay or Portland court and keep the report year attached to every figure.
Statistics do not replace a record search. They show filings or dispositions by court and year, not the identity, charge, setting, or outcome in one case. Use them only to understand system scale. The court label in MyCase remains the key to a Dunkirk record.
Dunkirk Search Number Codes
Jay County case numbers start with code 38. Circuit uses 38C01 and Superior uses 38D01, followed by filing year and month, case type, and sequence. A Dunkirk municipal matter heard in Portland carries the filing court’s number, not a Dunkirk court code. Copy every segment before requesting a document.
Older records can carry legacy codes or converted events. Give the clerk the approximate filing year, party names, and record type when the modern number is unknown. That information supports an index search without inventing a Dunkirk venue.
Public Access to Dunkirk Court Records
Indiana Access to Court Records Rule 4 presumes access unless another rule excludes the material. Rule 5 protects confidential, sealed, expunged, and other excluded information. Remote MyCase access may be narrower than access at the clerk’s counter. Ask Portland City Court for a covered municipal case, the Jay County Clerk for Circuit or Superior records, and Dunkirk for a town administrative file.
The Jay copy form asks for a case number, document type, date, party details, delivery method, and whether certification is needed. The published charge is $1 per page, with an extra $3 for certification and $3 for exemplification. Verify the current total before paying. Requests can be made through the clerk’s in-person, mail, phone, or published form routes when online access is incomplete.
Key Rules:
Access Rule 4 states the public-access presumption.
Access Rule 5 defines excluded and confidential material.
Indiana Access to Public Records Act applies to public-agency records outside the court-rule process.
